Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas set off outrage Wednesday when he told reporters that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) “does not have the funds” to see Americans through the rest of this Atlantic hurricane season — after the agency spent more than $1.4 billion since the fall of 2022 to address the migrant crisis.
“We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have,” Mayorkas said during a press gaggle on Air Force One en route to tour damage from Hurricane Helene in South and North Carolina.
“We are expecting another hurricane hitting,” he added. “We do not have the funds. FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season and what — what is imminent.”
Critics pointed out that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) allocated $640.9 million this year in FEMA-administered funds to aid state and local governments coping with the influx of asylum seekers — though Mayorkas’ office fired back late Thursday, insisting that those funds couldn’t be used for hurricane relief because Congress authorized them specifically for the migrant crisis.
Port Strike Ends

A three-day strike that halted shipping at 36 U.S. ports along the East and Gulf coasts ended Thursday.
This comes after the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance reached a tentative agreement on wages.
The deal, which extends the master contract between the union and port operators until Jan. 15, 2025, allows negotiations to continue on other aspects of the contract.

Illegal Migrant Crossings at Northern U.S. Border Skyrocket 50X Under Biden-Harris

The number of migrants caught crossing a stretch of the US-Canada border that includes northern New York has skyrocketed — increasing more than 50-fold under the Biden-Harris administration.
This year, illegal crossings surpassed the number for the last 17 years combined.
The Border Patrol agents in the Swanton sector — which includes more than 200 miles of land border between Maine and the St. Lawrence River in New York — apprehended more than 19,000 illegal migrants from 97 different countries in fiscal year 2024, the Border Patrol chief for the sector, Robert Garcia, said this week.
Why Is P Diddy’s Private Jet in Auckland?

A private jet believed to be owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs was seen to be grounded at Auckland Airport on Thursday afternoon.
The distinct all-black Gulfstream G550 was spotted at the airport’s C1 parking stand, which is generally reserved for private aircraft.

The aircraft is understood to be legally owned by US company LoveAir LLC.
It’s widely reported to belong to the 54-year-old music mogul. Video of Combs disembarking the craft was published in 2022, Reuters reports.
While the jet is on New Zealand’s shores, Combs is currently being held at a detention centre in the US after being arrested and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering on September 16.
Beneficial Soil Fungus Thrives in Presence of White Noise

Fungi may not have ears, but their growth appears to be tuned to the noises of their surroundings.
When a high-frequency monotone crackle, like that of radio static, is played to the fungus species, Trichoderma harzianum, researchers have found the organism grows and produces spores much faster than is typical – almost as if it were feeding on the white noise.
That’s an important finding, because T. harzianum is present in nearly all soils, and it is known to colonize plant roots and enhance their growth. On farms, this species can actually parasitize pathogenic fungi, which can hurt plants.
It’s, therefore, possible that by playing certain sounds, conservationists could promote healthier soils in numerous habitats and agricultural settings around the world.

And Now… Passengers Suspected of Having Marburg Virus Force Closure of Major German Train Station

Two passengers suspected of having the deadly Marburg virus have forced the closure of a major German station amid fears the highly infectious Ebola-like disease has reached Europe.
Police cordoned off tracks seven and eight for several hours at Hamburg Station and travellers were cleared from platforms after emergency services in full protective suits boarded the ICE from Frankfurt.
Local reports have stated that two passengers on board have apparently been infected with the deadly ‘eye-bleeding’ virus.
One of the passengers is a man said to be a German medical student, 26, who boarded the ICE train to Hamburg with his girlfriend on Wednesday afternoon in Frankfurt.
During the train ride, both developed flu-like symptoms.
According to Bild, the student had previously arrived by plane directly from Rwanda where he had contact with a patient who doctors later diagnosed as being infected with the Marburg virus.
